Shanghai Arbitration Commission, organized by the "Arbitration Law of the People's Republic of China", was founded on September 18, 1995.

　　Shanghai Arbitration Commission, in accordance with the Chinese law, in the light of international practice and according to the Arbitration Rules of the Commission, accepts and arbitrates independently, impartially and efficiently contractual disputes and other property rights disputes between natural persons, legal entities and other organizations of equal status.

　　Shanghai Arbitration Commission consists of 15 persons, who are experts in law and international trade, and other persons with practical experience in relevant areas. Mr. Qiao Xianzhi is the Director of the Commission. Vice directors are Mr. Li Changdao, Mr. Zhang Zhongyu, Mr. Wand Zhude and Wang Kangwu. Mr. Wang Kangwu is the secretary general and one of the vice directors concurrently. The honorary directors of the Commission are Mr. Li Guoguang, vice-president of the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China, and Mr. Xie Tianfang, director of the Commission of Legislative Affairs of the Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People's Congress. The administrative department of Shanghai Arbitration Commission is its secretariat, which consists of administration division and arbitration division.

　　Shanghai Arbitration Commission has now engaged 536 arbitrators. The arbitrators paneled include well-known professors, research fellows, senior economists, senior accountants, senior engineers, senior lawyers and persons who are well experienced in the work of arbitration, trial, economic administration, etc. in legal and economic sectors both at home and abroad, whose legal professional fields relating to commerce, real estates, finance (including futures and insurance), quality, intellectual property rights, engineering projects, maritime transportation affairs, international trade, transportation and communications, corporations, advertisement, electronic commerce, information industry, WTO affairs, etc.

　　Shanghai Arbitration Commission accepts applications for arbitration in accordance with the arbitration agreements between parties on referring their disputes to the Commission, including arbitration clauses in contracts or other written agreements concluded before or after the occurrence of a dispute.

　　The scope of the cases accepted by Shanghai Arbitration Commission is: contractual disputes, real estates disputes, engineering project disputes, financial disputes (including disputes over insurance, futures, stocks, financing, etc.), maritime transportation disputes, and economic disputes over international trade, international agency, international engineering projects, international investment, and international technological cooperation and so on.
